Summary of Penalties
 
     
 
  • Hitting your equipment with your ball: two strokes
  • Carrying more than 14 clubs: two strokes for each hole the player had the clubs, with a maximum of four strokes
  • Hitting outside the teeing ground: in stroke play, two strokes (player must tee off again from within the teeing ground)
  • Moving the tee markers: two strokes
  • Providing advice on club selection or the golf swing: two strokes
  • Ball moved during a search: one stroke (moved ball must be replaced)
  • Ball moved during practice swing: one stroke (moved ball must be replaced)
  • Altering the golf course: two strokes
  • Unplayable ball: one stroke
  • Hitting wrong ball: two penalty strokes (return to original point and play correct ball)
  • Lost ball: one stroke (return ball to original position)
  • Touching the sand prior to shot: two strokes
  • Removing loose impediments from a bunker: two strokes
  • Ball out of bounds: one stroke (return to original point for next shot)
  • Improving the line of a putt: two strokes
